Paula accidentally spilled the beans - American Idol is staged!?

After hearing Paul's flub on the Neil Diamond show, it seems possible that she was reading from material written in advance of the actual performances. Randy corrected Paula, saying just to talk about the 1st performance. However, at that point there was only one performance. Was this just Paula's mistake or does it show the American Idol is not as spontaneous as we'd like to think?
