What does it mean when your ex bf is all nice to you one day and wont even txt you back another?

one day he is all nice to me, goes out of his way to talk to me, IMs me and txts me non stop but then the next day he wont acknowledge that I'm even there, wont answer my txts and doesn't IM me. what does this mean??
